2-step algorithm testing for C. difficile - A tool for antibiotic stewardship
A recently published report details the experience of Indiana University School of Medicine, who recently made a change from PCR-only to a two-step algorithm C. diff testing. The change in testing algorithm correlated with a significant decrease in C. difficile-specific antibiotic treatment.
"Likely colonized" patients were 20X less likely to receive antibiotics following the testing change, with no negative impact to patient outcomes observed.
