The Code to Your Genetic Makeup
A cell is the basic unit of all living tissue. Within each cell is a nucleus, which contains your genetic information or genome. This genome is the sum of all genes, which are located on 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each chromosome contains a long strand of DNA. DNA is the code your body “reads” to create and recreate itself. Your genome, that is all of your DNA, contains about 20,000 genes.
DNA is made up of four types of molecules called nucleotides, also known as bases, arranged in pairs. These base pairs make up the rungs of the DNA double helix. Your DNA contains some 3 billion pairs of nucleotides. Science has proven that 99.9% of DNA is identical in everyone. The remaining 0.1% contains the information that creates individuality. That 0.1% difference means millions of base pairs are different from person to person.

A trait is a particular characteristic, quality or tendency you have. In science, a trait refers to something influenced by genetics.
Genes are sections of DNA and units of inherited information. Genes determine everything from the color of your eyes to your sensitivity to medication. Each gene has a specific location on a chromosome (known as a locus). There are two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent, and the copies of each gene are not necessarily the same.
A genotype is the particular combination of alleles, or variants, of a particular gene. An allele is one of a pair of genes at a particular location on a particular chromosome that serve the same function. When we say “your genotype” it means a pair of genes in your DNA that is responsible for a particular protein. The entire set of all of your genes, plus all the DNA between your genes, is called a genome.
The prevalence percentage shown next to each genotype is the percent of the population that has this genotype. NOTE: Prevalence in no way indicates a potential level of impact of that gene.
